John McCarthy

19 November 1989
Club:
Collingwood
Honours:
2007 NAB AFL Draft pick no. 31
2008 AFL Debut

John was drafted from Sorrento via Dandenong Stingrays U18s. He played just nine games in the TAC Cup but the Pies recruiters were impressed by his speed and hardness at the contest.

After playing in the final six AFL games of the 2008 season, John McCarthy’s 2009 season got off to a slow start with the midfielder sustaining a hamstring injury in the opening round of the VFL season.  John returned for two matches in the middle of the home-and-away season before he was forced to the sidelines for another two months. A return to the park at the end of the season saw the young gun produce some encouraging numbers, including consecutive matches with over 20 disposals which warranted a late season elevation to the seniors.

McCarthy has been touted as the next Scott Burns and his fierce competitiveness and strength over the ball hold him in good stead to achieve that title.
