Originally from Stawell Warriors, Matt was recruited from North Ballarat Under 18’s and is a lively small midfielder. Austin had an outstanding Under 18’s campaign with North Ballarat which saw him earn selection for the National Draft Camp and represent Vic Country in the National Championships. Matt co-captained North Ballarat in 2007 and showed immense maturity and leadership both on and off the field. Added to his attributes is his ability to kick goals, which has set him up to become a promising young footballer.

Austin earned his first senior call-up in the Lions' Round 8 win against Adelaide at the Gabba, during the 2009 season. Austin played a total of eight matches for the season and kicked two goals. He reserved one of his best performances for the season against the Blues under the pressure of an Elimination Final at the Gabba.
