Originally from North Shore in NSW, Ryan was picked-up in the 2007 Rookie Draft after representing NSW/ACT at the Under-18 Championships. 

A running defender with good athleticism and speed, Ryan forced his way onto the Primary list to play 11 senior matches in 2008 including a 19-posession performance against Premiers Hawthorn in Round 14.
