Nathan is a dynamic young midfielder that was drafted to Melbourne with their first pick in the 2005 AFL National Draft, number 12 overall, from the Dandenong Stingrays.

As a youngster, Nathan was a top level triathlete and had to make a big decision whether to pursue AFL or triathlons. To the delight of the Demons fans he chose football, bursting into the AFL scene with a brilliant first season in 2006, making his debut against the Bulldogs in round 17 and played out the remainder of the season including two finals. With a sensational performance against the Kangaroos in that same season, Nathan gathered 25 possessions and nine marks, undoubtedly earning himself a NAB AFL Rising Star Nomination.

Over the 2007 pre-season, Nathan concentrated on improving his running game, setting himself up for a huge 2007. He did just that by collecting a high number of valuable possessions in the first part of the season creating a solid foundation and impressed with a career high equaling 25 possessions against Port Adelaide in round 17, earning himself another Rising Star Nomination. In 2007, in an otherwise disappointing season for Melbourne, Jones was a strong contender for the Rising Star Award, placing third and capped off his season with a Runner’s Up in the Club's Best and Fairest Award (the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medal) with 190 votes.

In 2008, Nathan continued his good form and played his 50th game in the second half of the season. Having played 20 games during the 2009 season, Nathan averaged 22 disposals, 11 handballs and 10 kicks per game and came equal fifth in Melbourne’s Best & Fairest with a total of 44 votes.

Nathan is a hard running, tough midfielder with plenty of skill who is an important player in the Demons senior side.
