Daniel’s junior football was played at Hampton Rovers before playing U18’s at Sandringham where he was recognised that he is a clever medium tall forward who uses the football intelligently and can play in a number of positions. Daniel was picked up by Melbourne in the 2005 AFL Rookie Draft after playing with their affiliated VFL side, Sandringham.
Daniel enjoyed a good solid season with Sandringham in 2006 and as a result was retained on Melbourne’s rookie list for another season to continue his football development.
Daniel showed plenty of ability during the 2007 NAB Cup and practice matches, illustrating his tidy hand skills, good mark and quick huge vertical leap, however was sidelined for the bulk of 2007 and 2008 due to injury.
Daniel was drafted back onto Melbourne’s rookie list in the 2008 NAB AFL Rookie Draft and showed some really good improvement throughout the 2009 season. Coming off his hip injury, Hughes was able to play some good footy at Casey and was explosive and lead-up forward, with really good speed and power.
Having the ability to play in the midfield, Daniel really takes the game on and will be a difficult forward to match-up on.
