Originally from West Broken Hill Football Club, Brent moved to Canberra on a scholarship with NSW/ACT Rams. Brent is a consistent player with great athletic qualities and can play in a number of roles. He is deceptively strong, is excellent overhead and can play at either end of the ground. His flexibility as a player is an appealing quality to coaching staff and persuaded the Eagles to draft him in 2002 with their third round selection.

Brent made his AFL debut in 2003 against the Hawks in Round 17 and managed to play seven games for the Eagles in that season. He continued his development at senior level in the proceeding year, in which he played 17 games and received a NAB AFL Rising Star Nomination for his performance in round 7 against Melbourne where he kicked 3 goals, took 7 marks and collected 13 disposals. He carried his consistent form into the 2005 season, playing 22 games including the Grand Final.

Brent started the 2006 season with a bang, collecting 31 possessions, 15 marks and 4 goals in just the first two games of the season. He then went on to play all 23 games for the season, but unfortunately due to a team balance issue he was dropped from the side and missed out on Grand Final selection. None the less he certainly played his part in the team’s premiership success.

The disappointment of missing out on playing in the 2006 premiership was forgotten during the 2007 season with his prominent performance in the forward line, once again a reflection of his playing flexibility.

The young veteran enjoyed career-best form late in the 2008 season, dominating the round 17 win over St Kilda with 22 possessions and three goals, before breaking his thumb in the following week’s derby and missing the remainder of the year.  In 2009, Staker was only able to play six games for the Eagles, as he struggled with consecutive hand injuries. At the end of the season, Brent expressed his ambitions of playing in the midfield and believed a change of environment was the best thing for his football. As a result, Brent was traded from the Eagles to the Lions, in exchange for Bradd Dalziell.

Off the field, Brent is a great lover of animals and conservation. He is associated and heavily involved with the RSPCA and has been involved with World Animal Day, an international celebration of animals and the contribution they make to our lives. Brent aims to protect and save animals and their environment by developing a relationship with organisations such as Planet Ark, Wild Aid, the Wildlife Conservancy of Tropical Queensland and the Whaleman Foundation.
