Stephen played his junior football with Noble Park before heading to Essendon Reserves. In 2001, Milne eventually gained promotion from the St Kilda rookie list and is further testament to persistence paying off.
A bright spark in an otherwise dull St Kilda side during 2001 and 2002, Stephen dominated as a small forward. He led the Saints goalkicking in 2002 and was rewarded with selection in the International Rules Series in the same year.
Stephen continued to be a valuable goal kicker managing 46 goals in 2004 and 61 goals in 2005. His consistent performances were rewarded with a promotion to the leadership group in 2006, where he was given bigger responsibilities playing further up the ground.
In 2007, Stephen was again amongst the goals with 32, finishing third on the Saints goalkicking list. He improved his defensive pressure and continued his role further up the ground, winning more of the ball than in the past.
Milne played in St Kilda’s 2008 NAB Cup winning side, the club's third pre-season cup win. During the season, in a game against Fremantle at Subiaco, Milne kicked three goals after a head clash and was immediately driven back from Perth with St Kilda medical staff to avoid the risk of further damage.
In 2009, Milne was awarded with an Army Award Nomination and played a total of 20 games during the home and away season. Capping off his season, Milne registered 11 AFL finals matches and played in his first AFL Grand Final.
One of the competition’s most exhilarating players, Stephen uses his pace and flair, combined with accurate kicking to make the most of every opportunity. St Kilda will be looking towards Stephen to provide the younger forward line players with valuable experience and leadership required for their development.
