Originally from Frankston in Victoria, Paul returned home after two years with West Coast. He measures in at 199cm but is quite agile for his size and has good ability in front of goal which makes him a hard player to match up on.
In 2005, Paul played 8 games for Melbourne at senior level as well as playing consistent football for Sandringham in the VFL. As a result of this he won the VFL Liston Medal; the leagues Best & Fairest. Unfortunately for Paul his football development was put on hold in 2006 after a serious shoulder injury which saw him sidelined for the rest of the season.
The big left-footer played 16 games in 2008; the same as 2007, but his numbers were up significantly. He had 220 disposals in 2008 (149 in 2007), 75 marks (54 in 2007), 149 hit-outs (119 in 2007) and 35 tackles (19 in 2007). During the season, Johnson also kicked one of the goals of the year against Geelong but was left with a broken hand after the match.
Heading into the 2009 season optimistically and injury free, Johnson finished the year with 18 senior games under his belt.
Johnson’s recent performances will hopefully see him play more senior football for the Melbourne Football Club and forge a successful career.
